Belgravia Group and Belgravia Outdoor Education Announce Transformative Partnership
Belgravia Outdoor Education (BOE) and Belgravia Group are proud to announce an exciting new chapter in the storied history of the Mount Buffalo Chalet. Built in 1910, this iconic alpine landmark will now serve as a hub for outdoor education, community engagement, and sustainable alpine tourism, thanks to a visionary partnership with Parks Victoria and investments from the Belgravia Group as well as the Victorian and Australian Governments.
Nestled in the heart of Mount Buffalo National Park, the Chalet has been a cherished destination for over a century. Now, with its lease secured by BOE, it is set to become a beacon for experiential learning and conservation, inspiring thousands of students and visitors annually.
A Vision for Education, Equity, and Growth
Inspiring Over 4,500 Students Annually
The Mount Buffalo Chalet will host up to 250 students per session, providing over 5,000 young people each year with access to transformative outdoor education programs. These immersive experiences will foster critical life skills such as resilience, leadership, and environmental responsibility, preparing the next generation to thrive in a changing world.
“Our programs are designed to connect young minds with the natural environment while instilling leadership and teamwork skills that last a lifetime,” said Richard Thornton, CEO of Belgravia Outdoor Education. “Mount Buffalo Chalet provides the perfect setting for this kind of growth.”
A Unique Setting for Growth
Located amidst the breathtaking beauty of Mount Buffalo National Park, the Chalet combines natural splendour with historic significance, creating an unparalleled learning environment. Students will engage in hands-on activities that merge education with exploration, enhancing personal development through direct interaction with the environment.
Honouring Heritage Through Active Use
Preserving a Historic Landmark
Belgravia Outdoor Education’s vision breathes new life into the Mount Buffalo Chalet, ensuring its preservation through active and purposeful use. By transforming the site into a vibrant outdoor education hub, this historic gem will continue to inspire future generations while honouring its architectural charm and storied past.
Public Access and Community Engagement
Once restoration is complete, the Chalet will expand its offerings to include public accommodation, creating opportunities for families and tourists to experience this unique alpine setting during weekends and school holidays. Additionally, an on-site café, set to open in 2025, will serve as a community hub, offering a welcoming space for locals and visitors to connect while enjoying the natural beauty of Mount Buffalo.
A Commitment to Equity and Inclusion
Access for All
Through the Belgravia Foundation, the Chalet’s programs will ensure equity of access for all students, regardless of financial or social circumstances. No child will miss out on these life-changing experiences, thanks to dedicated support aimed at removing barriers and fostering inclusivity.
“We believe every child deserves the opportunity to grow through outdoor education,” said Thornton. “This partnership embodies that commitment.”
Building a Sustainable Future
Investments in Conservation and Community
Significant upgrades are already underway at the Chalet, with the Victorian Government investing $2.8 million in maintenance and conservation works and a further $1.8 million being committed for the café and outdoor education centre.
The Australian Government has also committed $3 million to help conserve the sprawling Chalets façade. These efforts complement plans to enhance food and beverage facilities, create regional worker accommodations, and establish the Chalet as a vibrant destination for alpine tourism.
“Securing the lease for the Mount Buffalo Chalet is a testament to our dedication to creating lasting impacts through education, conservation, and community development,” said Thornton. “This is a journey we’re excited to share with the entire region.”
